Finally, the war to retake the Fables’ Homeland commences. But not before a couple of set-up yarns. “Kingdom Come,” drawn by Niko Henrichon more loosely and cartoony than main-story artist Mark Buckingham would have, tells how the torch Boy Blue has long carried for Rose Red is snuffed out, and “Skulduggery” is a hostage-rescue thriller with Cinderella as the ruthless rescuer. The rest of the book is the war, which is satisfyingly heroic and gritty but, as it happens, not the grand finale of the Fables saga. A further volume of denouement is promised. Goody! –Ray Olson

Novel by Jules Verne, published in 1864 in French as Voyage au centre de la Terre. It is the second book in his popular science-fiction series Voyages extraordinaires (1863-1910). Otto Lidenbrock, an impetuous German professor of geology, discovers an encoded manuscript in which a 16th-century explorer claims to have found a passageway to the center of the Earth. Otto impulsively prepares a subterranean expedition, enlisting his young nephew Axel and a stoic Icelandic guide, Hans Bjelke. After descending into an extinct volcano in Iceland, the men spend several months in a underground world of luminous rocks, antediluvian forests, and fantastic sea creatures until they ride a volcanic eruption out of Stromboli Island, off the coast of Italy. — The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

"In 1864 Jules Verne published ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth,’ the charming narrative of the adventures of a party of three, led by a German professor of mineralogy – the irascible mad-scientist type – who have lowered themselves into an extinct volcanic crater."

Feeling a little bored? Restless? This looks like a job for Captain Underpants! “Tra-la-laaaaaa!” This outrageously funny series by Dav Pilkey is sure to make bookworms out of reluctant readers. Who could resist the subversive adventures of George and Harold, who are often fairly solid citizens: “Whenever anything bad happened, George and Harold were usually responsible.” After hypnotizing their school principal and turning him into their own made-up superhero, the boys and Captain Underpants embark on several chapter books’ worth of adventures. Magnificently atrocious schoolboy humor and cartoon-style illustrations have made this award-winning series wildly popular among beginning and chapter-book readers. This boxed set includes all four epic novels in paperback: The Adventures of Captain Underpants, Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets, Captain Underpants and the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies from Outer Space, and Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants, as well as–believe it or not–a Captain Underpants whoopee cushion. Fantastic! Silly! Irresistible! (Ages 7 to 12) –Emilie Coulter

Willingham’s happy idea of bringing the Fables–that is, the characters of Europe’s best-known fairy tales–to contemporary New York rolls merrily, dangerously along in two stories. The former, “The Last Castle,” guest-drawn by P. Craig Russell and Craig Hamilton, flashes back to the Fables’ last stand in their home world; echoing the Disney and John Wayne Alamo flicks and Peter Jackson’s Two Towers, it winningly introduces the long title story, in which Boy Blue reencounters the love he loses in “The Last Castle”–the grown-up Red Riding Hood. But is this the same Red? Reason for doubt precedes her in goblin sightings near a door between this and the Fables’ worlds–and goblins can only be harbingers of impending attack by the Adversary, who drove the Fables into exile. Meanwhile, what’s with these toughies in black suits who look like Pinocchio? Willingham never sacrifices a joke for the sake of a thrill, or vice versa, and artist Mark Buckingham continues matching Willingham joke for thrill, and vice versa. Ray Olson
