Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t [Hardcover] chapter Summaries:

Amazon.com Review

Five years ago, Jim Collins asked the question, “Can a good company become a great company and if so, how?” In Good to Great Collins, the author of Built to Last, concludes that it is possible, but finds there are no silver bullets. Collins and his team of researchers began their quest by sorting through a list of 1,435 companies, looking for those that made substantial improvements in their performance over time. They finally settled on 11–including Fannie Mae, Gillette, Walgreens, and Wells Fargo–and discovered common traits that challenged many of the conventional notions of corporate success. Making the transition from good to great doesn’t require a high-profile CEO, the latest technology, innovative change management, or even a fine-tuned business strategy. At the heart of those rare and truly great companies was a corporate culture that rigorously found and promoted disciplined people to think and act in a disciplined manner. Peppered with dozens of stories and examples from the great and not so great, the book offers a well-reasoned road map to excellence that any organization would do well to consider. Like Built to Last, Good to Great is one of those books that managers and CEOs will be reading and rereading for years to come. –Harry C. Edwards

From Wikipedia

Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t is a 2001 management book by James C. Collins that aims to describe how companies transition from being average companies to great companies and how companies can fail to make the transition. "Greatness" is defined as financial performance several multiples better than the market average over a sustained period of time. Collins finds the main factor for achieving the transition to be a narrow focusing of the company’s resources on their field of competence.

Steve Jobs [Hardcover] chapter Summaries:

Product Description

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.   Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted. Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

About the Author

Walter Isaacson, the CEO of the Aspen Institute, has been chairman of CNN and the managing editor of Time magazine. He is the author of Benjamin Franklin: An American Life and of Kissinger: A Biography, and the coauthor of The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made. He lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife and daughter.

Mockingjay [Hardcover] chapter Summaries:

Amazon. com Assessment

Product Description
In opposition to all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Food craving Games twice. But now which she's made it out from the bloody arena survive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wishes revenge. Who do that they think should spend on the unrest? Katniss. Plus what's worse, President Snow has achieved it clear that no person else is safe either. Not Katniss's household, not her buddies, not the folks of District 14. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling last installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Video games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books on the year.

A Q& YOUR with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book belonging to the Hunger Games)
Q: You have said through the start that That Hunger Games account was intended for a trilogy. Did it actually end how you planned it through the beginning? A: Significantly so. While I didn't know each and every detail, of training, the arc belonging to the story from gladiator adventure, to revolution, that will war, to the final outcome remained constant throughout the writing process. Q: We understand you worked on the initial screenplay for any film to be based on The Hunger Game titles. What is the main difference between writing a novel in addition to writing a screenplay? YOUR: There were a group of significant differences. Occasion, for starters. When you're adapting a novel right two-hour movie you can't take everything on hand. The story must be condensed to fit the newest form. Then there's that question of how best for taking a book told while in the first person plus present tense in addition to transform it into a satisfying dramatic practical knowledge. In the work of fiction, you never leave Katniss for just a second and are aware of all of her thoughts so you need a method to dramatize her inner world and also to make it likely for other people to exist beyond her company. Lastly, there's the challenge of how you can present the violence while still retaining a PG-13 rating so your core visitors can view that. A lot with things are acceptable using a page that wouldn't be on a screen. But how particular moments are portrayed will ultimately be while in the director's hands. Q: Are you able to consider future projects while taking care of The Hunger Video games, or are you immersed on this planet you are at present creating so fully that it is too difficult to consider new ideas? YOUR: I have one or two seeds of thoughts floating around around my head but–given that much of my focus is still on The Hunger Games–it might be awhile before you fully emerges and I will begin to build it. Q: The Hunger Games is definitely an annual televised event through which one boy and something girl from each one of the twelve districts is definitely forced to attend a fight-to-the-death on live TV. What on earth do you think the appeal of reality television is–to both youngsters and adults? YOUR: Well, they're often setup as games in addition to, like sporting situations, there's an involvement in seeing who benefits. The contestants are frequently unknown, which would make them relatable. Sometimes they've got very talented individuals performing. Then there exists the voyeuristic thrill— observing people being humiliated, or delivered to tears, or troubled physically–which I locate very disturbing. Additionally , there is the potential to get desensitizing the market, so that once they see real loss playing out about, say, the news, it doesn't possess the impact it will need to. Q: If you used to be forced to compete in the Hunger Games, what on earth do you think your special skill would be? A: Hiding. I would be scaling all those trees like Katniss in addition to Rue. Since I became trained in sword-fighting, I guess this best hope would be to get hold of your rapier if there was one available. But the truth is I'd probably find about a a number of in Training. Q: What do you hope readers can come away with every time they read The Food craving Games trilogy? YOUR: Questions about how elements belonging to the books might be relevant for their own lives. Plus, if they're disturbing, what they may possibly do about these individuals. Q: What were a number of your favorite novels once you were a young adults? A: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn simply by Betty Smith
The Heart Is usually a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
19 Eighty Four by George Orwell
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Slaughterhouse-Five by simply Kurt Vonnegut
A Wrinkle over time by Madeleine L’ Engle
Lord belonging to the Flies by William Golding
Boris through Jaapter Haar
Germinal simply by Emile Zola
Dandelion Wine beverages by Ray Bradbury

Out of School Library Record

Grade 7 Way up Following her subversive second victory while in the Games, this one constructed from winners from earlier years, Katniss has become adopted by rebel factions as his or her symbol for overall flexibility and becomes the rallying point for the districts in any desperate bid taking down the Capitol and remove President Environments from power. But being the Mockingjay has a price as Katniss must go to terms with the amount of of her individual humanity and sanity your lover can willingly sacrifice for your cause, her friends, and her family. Collins is totally ruthless in her depictions of war in most its cruelty, physical violence, and loss, leaving readers, in change, repulsed, shocked, grieving plus, finally, hopeful for the characters they've developed to empathize together with and love. Mockingjay is usually a fitting end belonging to the series that began with all the Hunger Games (2008) along with Catching Fire (2009) all of which will have the similar lasting resonance seeing that William Golding's Lord with the Flies and Stephen King's This Stand. However, the book is not really a stand-alone; readers do need to know the first two titles so that they can appreciate the situations and characters in this one. I Remember Nothing: and Other Reflections [Deckle Edge] chapter Summaries:

Amazon. com Examine

A Letter from Author Nora Ephron
I have a book forthcoming out called I Recall Nothing, and it will probably not surprise to hear that WE can’ t evoke how I came to write the item.

I notice that most authors who come up with their books about their Amazon internet page know exactly while inspiration struck, and in addition they describe this Eureka instant quite eloquently. Although I don’ t have a clue about mine. There had to own been a blinding flash after i realized I must write something related to Age and Storage, but, as WHEN I said, I keep in mind nothing, and my guess is always that this shimmering information was followed quickly by my disregarding I’ d had the idea from the start. And then I'd the idea again. And forgot this again. Until as a final point, miraculously, it trapped.

When you’ re younger, you make jokes about how things slip ones mind. You feel it’ s funny that you’ ve wandered into your kitchen and can’ capital t remember why. Or which you carefully made a shopping list and left it home around the counter. Or which you managed to put aside the plot of an movie you saw only yesterday.

After which you get more mature.

After some duration ago, the acting professional Ryan O’ Neal still did not recognize his very own daughter Tatum at the funeral and by chance made a go away at her. Everyone was very judgmental relating to this, but not me personally: only a month or so earlier, I’ d been from a mall in Las Vegas each time a very pleasant-looking lovely women came toward us, her arms outstretched, and also I thought to myself, who is woman? How must i know her? It ended up being my sister Amy. You could think, well, how was she to recognise her sister is at Las Vegas, although I’ m sorry to say that not only did I know, but she was those I was meeting within the mall.

Anyhow, at some point, I thought perhaps fun to prepare a book with regards to what I recall, and what I’ ve neglected. I still look bad about my neck, but I feel even more difficult about the belief that huge bits of my entire life have gone slip-sliding away, and I considered I’ d better create them down whilst I still had a feeling of humor over it all.

That Used to Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented and How We Can Come Back [Hardcover] chapter Summaries:

Review

“Friedman and Mandelbaum are men of the American elite, and they write to salute those members of the American elite who behave public-spiritedly and to scourge those who do not. They are winners, writing to urge other winners to have more of a care for their fellow citizens who are not winners. And you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that! . . . American society has had a big serving of that ugly anti-elitist spirit in the recent past. It could use more of the generous responsible spirit Friedman and Mandelbaum recommend.” —David Frum, The New York Times Book Review“This is a book of exceptional importance, written on a sweeping scale with remarkable clarity by two of our most gifted thinkers. A soon-to-be best seller, it should be read by policymakers and every American concerned about our country’s future.” —Elizabeth L. Winter, Library Journal
