Starred Review. Gr 7 Up–Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists where the U.S. used to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament in which two teen “tributes” from each of the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle to the death. In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing them to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to find herself more the center of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her with a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is divided into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version of the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the nation of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, and a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens as a character. Though initially bewildered by the attention paid to her, she comes almost to embrace her status as the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more of the story takes place outside the arena than within, this sequel has enough action to please Hunger Games fans and leaves enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to be desperate for the next installment.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Reviewers were happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward to the third book in the series after this one’s stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as good as the original book Hunger Games or should be viewed as somewhat of a “sophomore slump.” Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss’s romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons to the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire was still a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a way that will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares.

Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2011: In the Garden of Beasts is a vivid portrait of Berlin during the first years of Hitler’s reign, brought to life through the stories of two people: William E. Dodd, who in 1933 became America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s regime, and his scandalously carefree daughter, Martha. Ambassador Dodd, an unassuming and scholarly man, is an odd fit among the extravagance of the Nazi elite. His frugality annoys his fellow Americans in the State Department and Dodd’s growing misgivings about Hitler’s ambitions fall on deaf ears among his peers, who are content to “give Hitler everything he wants.” Martha, on the other hand, is mesmerized by the glamorous parties and the high-minded conversation of Berlin’s salon society—and flings herself headlong into numerous affairs with the city’s elite, most notably the head of the Gestapo and a Soviet spy. Both become players in the exhilarating (and terrifying) story of Hitler’s obsession for absolute power, which culminates in the events of one murderous night, later known as “the Night of Long Knives.” The rise of Nazi Germany is a well-chronicled time in history, which makes In the Garden of Beasts all the more remarkable. Erik Larson has crafted a gripping, deeply-intimate narrative with a climax that reads like the best political thriller, where we are stunned with each turn of the page, even though we already know the outcome. –Shane Hansanuwat

“Larson’s latest chronicle of history has as much excitement as a thriller novel, and it’s all the more thrilling because it’s all true.”–Asbury Park Press
“A superb book…nothing less than masterful.”–Toronto Globe and Mail
“Even though we know how it will end — the book’s climax, the Night of the Long Knives, being just the beginning, this is a page-turner, full of flesh and blood people and monsters too, whose charms are particularly disturbing.”–Portland Herald
“Larson succeeds brilliantly…offers a fascinating window into the year when the world began its slow slide into war.”–Maclean’s Magazine
“Erik Larson tackles this outstanding period of history as fully and compellingly as he portrayed the events in his bestseller, THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY. With each page, more horrors are revealed, making it impossible to put down. IN THE GARDEN OF BEASTS reads like the true thriller it is.”–BookReporter.com
“Larson’s strengths as a storyteller have never been stronger than they are here, and this story is far more important than either “The Devil in the White City” or “Thunderstruck.” How the United States dithered as Hitler rose to power is a cautionary tale that bears repeating, and Larson has told it masterfully.”–Cleveland Plain Dealer
“Reads like an elegant thriller…utterly compelling… marvelous stuff. An excellent and entertaining book that deserves to be a bestseller, and probably will be.”—The Washington Post
“Larson’s scholarship is impressive, but it’s his pacing and knack for suspense that elevates the book from the matter-of-fact to the sublime.”–Pittsburgh Review
“A master at writing true tales as riveting as fiction.”–People (3 1/2 stars)
“Larson has done it again, expertly weaving together a fresh new narrative from ominous days of the 20th century.”–Associated Press
“”Mesmerizing…cinematic, improbable yet true.”–Philadelphia Inquirer
“[L]ike slipping slowly into a nightmare, with logic perverted and morality upended….It all makes for a powerful, unsettling immediacy.”–Bruce Handy, Vanity Fair
“Dazzling….Reads like a suspense novel, replete with colorful characters, both familiar and those previously relegated to the shadows. Like Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Stories or Victor Klemperer’s Diaries, IN THE GARDEN OF BEASTS is an on-the-ground documentary of a society going mad in slow motion.”–The Chicago Sun-Times
“[G]ripping, a nightmare narrative of a terrible time. It raises again the question never fully answered about the Nazi era—what evil humans are capable of, and what means are necessary to cage the beast.”–The Seattle Times
“In this mesmerizing portrait of the Nazi capital, Larson plumbs a far more diabolical urban cauldron than in his bestselling The Devil in the White City…a vivid, atmospheric panorama of the Third Reich and its leaders, including murderous Nazi factional infighting, through the accretion of small crimes and petty thuggery.”–Publishers Weekly(Starred Review)

— Joe McGinniss, author connected with Never Enough “I cannot imagine an added enjoyable and enlightening, if not mesmerizing book, at once fascinating word by word and somehow larger than the sum of its parts. A biography with the heart is compelling so it isn’ t around the heart so much the way it is about getting human. A lovely reserve, moving, witty, as well as, of course, instructed with great heart. “

Starred Evaluate. Mark Twain is actually his own greatest character in this brilliant self-portrait, the primary of three volumes collected from the Mark Twain Project to the centenary of this author's death. It is published complete and unexpurgated for before. (Twain wanted his more scalding views suppressed until prolonged after his passing away. ) Eschewing chronology and organization, Twain simply meanders from declaration to anecdote and also between past and also present. There tend to be gorgeous reminiscences by his youth with landscapes, rural idylls, and Tom Sawyeresque japes; acid-etched profiles associated with friends and enemies, from his “fiendish” Florentine landlady on the fatuous and “grotesque” Rockefellers; a searing polemic using a 1906 American massacre with Filipino insurgents; a hilarious screed alongside a hapless manager who dared tweak his prose; and countless tales on the author's own bamboozlement, on to bankruptcy, by authors, business partners, medical doctors, miscellaneous moochers; he was even outsmarted by way of wild turkey. Laced having Twain's unique mix of humor and also vitriol, the haphazard narrative is engrossing, massively funny, and significantly revealing of the author's mind. His is really a world where each and every piety conceals fraudulence and every arcadia the trace of physical violence; he relishes the human comedy and also reveres true nobility, but as he tolls this bell for close friends and family–most tenderly throughout an elegy intended for his daughter Susy, who died throughout her early 20s connected with meningitis–he feels that life is really a pointless charade. Twain's memoirs certainly are a pointillist masterpiece that his vision with America–half paradise, 1 / 2 swindle–emerges with indelible power. 66 photos along with line illus. (Nov. ) (c)

*Starred Review* Inside explaining his dissatisfaction along with his early attempts for you to write his your life story, Mark Twain held accountable the narrowness on the conventional cradle-to-grave structure: “ The side-excursions are the life of our life-voyage, and should be, also, of its history. ” The following volume— the very first of three— makes public autobiographical dictations where Twain unpredictably pursues the countless side-excursions of his or her remarkably creative life. Embedded in excellent editorial apparatus, these free-spirited forays expose private tasks of character that the author did not want on the web until he have been dead at minimum a century. Followers see, for case in point, a misanthropic Twain consigning man to a status below that from the grubs and worms, as well to be a tenderhearted Twain still grieving per annum after his wife’ utes death. But on some side-excursions, Twain flashes your irreverent wit that will made him renowned: Who will not delight in Twain’ s account of how, for a boy, he gleefully dons that bright parade banner on the local Temperance Resort, only to shuck his or her banner upon finding a cigar stub the guy can light up? But perhaps the main side-excursions are individuals retracing the imaginative prospecting of a miner for fictional gold, efforts that led to such works seeing that Roughing It and also Innocents Abroad. A treasure trove with regard to serious Twain visitors. –Bryce Christensen
