Amazon Best Books in the Month, March THE NEW YEAR: Matterhorn is any marvel–a living, breathing book using Lieutenant Waino Mellas and also the men of Bravo Provider at its raw and battered coronary heart. Karl Marlantes doesn't introduce to Vietnam in her brilliant war epic–he unceremoniously drops you into your jungle, disoriented in addition to dripping with leeches, by using only the beginner lieutenant as your own guide. Mellas is a large number of anxiety and aspirations, a college child who never imagined joining a “war that will none of his friends thought had been worth fighting, ” who came to the realization too late this “because of his desire to look good coming home coming from a war, he might under no circumstances come home whatsoever. ” A remarkably decorated Vietnam veteran himself, Marlantes brings this horrors and heroism of war to life with all the finesse of the seasoned writer, exposing not the things they will carry, but that fears they hide, the friends they will lose, and that men they follow. Matterhorn is the maximum amount about the introduction of Mellas from youngster to man, from the type of man you fight beside towards man you deal with for, as it truly is about the war itself. Through his or her untrained eyes, readers gain a fresh perspective on this ravages of battle, the politics and bureaucracy in the military, and that peculiar beauty regarding brotherhood.

The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology [Paperback] chapter Summaries:

Via Publishers Weekly

Starred Evaluate. Renowned inventor Kurzweil (The Get older of Spiritual Machines) may perhaps be technology's most credibly hyperbolic optimist. Elsewhere he's argued that reducing fat intake might prevent cancer; the following, his quarry may be the future of mind and intelligence. Humankind, it runs, is at the threshold of the epoch (“the singularity, ” a reference on the theoretical limitlessness regarding exponential expansion) which will see the joining of our biology while using staggering achievements involving “GNR” (genetics, nanotechnology and robotics) to build a species regarding unrecognizably high cleverness, durability, comprehension, memory and the like. The word “unrecognizable” just isn't chosen lightly: wherever this is heading, it won't appear to be us. Kurzweil's debate is necessarily twofold: it isn't really enough to argue that you will find virtually no restrictions on our ability; he must furthermore convince readers this such developments tend to be desirable. In substance, he conflates the wholesale transformation on the species with “immortality, ” for which read a repeal associated with human limit. Around less capable hands and wrists, this phantasmagoria of speculative extrapolation, which incorporates a bewildering variety of charts, quotations, lively Socratic dialogues as well as sidebars, would become easier to dismiss. But Kurzweil is really a true scientist— a large-minded one during that— and gives due space both to be able to “the panoply connected with existential risks” since he sees them along with the many presumed ranges of attack some others might bring to deal with. What's arresting isn't the degree to which Kurzweil's heady and also bracing vision does not convince— given the actual scope of his / her projections, that's inevitable— women and men degree to which they may be downright plausible. Catching Fire [Hardcover] chapter summaries

By Books S on January 5, 2012 in Bestsellers

Catching Fire [Hardcover] chapter Summaries:

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Gr 7 Up–Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists where the U.S. used to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament in which two teen “tributes” from each of the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle to the death. In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing them to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to find herself more the center of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her with a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is divided into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version of the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the nation of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, and a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens as a character. Though initially bewildered by the attention paid to her, she comes almost to embrace her status as the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more of the story takes place outside the arena than within, this sequel has enough action to please Hunger Games fans and leaves enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to be desperate for the next installment.

From Bookmarks Magazine

Reviewers were happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward to the third book in the series after this one’s stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as good as the original book Hunger Games or should be viewed as somewhat of a “sophomore slump.” Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss’s romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons to the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire was still a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a way that will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares.
